Simple Present Tense - Third Person

When referring to (He, She, or It) or 3rd person, use the present tense verb and add a S at the end.

 Use the form: Present Tense Verb + s

 Examples:

  • Talk + s
          'She talks a lot.'
  • Play + s
          'He plays football.'
  • Rain + s
          'It rains a lot.'

Irregular Verbs


1. If the verb ends in SS, X, CH, SH or the letter O, we add + ES in the third person.

 Examples:

  • Kiss + es = Kisses
          'He kisses her.'
  • Fix + es = Fixes
          'She fixes her makeup.'
  • Watch + es = Watches
          'My friend watches soccer.'
  • Crash + es = Crashes
          'The car crashes horribly.'
  • Go + es = Goes
          'The plate goes on the table.'

2. If the verb ends in a Y, drop the Y and add + IES in the third person.

Examples:
  • Carry - Carr + ies = Carries
          'The man carries the box.'
  • Study - Stud + ies = Studies
           'The girl studies all night.'
  • Deny - Den + ies = Denies
           'He denies that he drunk the milk.'

Negative Sentence


To make the sentence negative, place the "do not" before the verb.

Use the form: Noun + Do Not + Verb

Contractions used: Do not( Don't ), Does Not( Doesn't )

Examples:
  • I don't run.
  • You don't work.
  • He doesn't walk.
  • She doesn't eat.
  • It doesn't work.
  • We don't sleep.
  • They don't study.
In the negative, the main verb is always in the infinitive form (without the TO). It doesn't change for the third person. We don't put an S on the end of the verb in the negative form. In the examples above - the verbs do not change in the 3rd person.

Examples:
  • You don't drive.
  • He doesn't speak English.
  • She doesn't run everyday.
